Being a student during the 21st century is unlike any other learning experience — specifically for students at private boarding schools like Wasatch Academy. Not only do high school students of the 21st century need to display competency in basic academic subjects (English, Art, Mathematics, Science, History, etc.), they must also acquire skills in three additional areas: learning and innovation, information/media and technology, and life and career skills.

Students at private boarding schools display a high aptitude in all of these areas — ultimately preening these individuals for future success in careers of their choice. Yet why are each of these different skill areas so critical, specifically for 21st century students? Here’s a look at why each of these skill sets are relevant for students today.

Creativity and Critical Thinking for the 21st Century

The world has always been a complex place; however, its complexity within both life and work environments has reached new heights in the 21st century. Consequently, learning and innovation — with an emphasis of creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration — are not only beneficial skill sets for students at private boarding schools, they’re necessary character traits to survive in a constantly-changing world.

Teaching Students to Navigate Media and Technology

It’s almost impossible for students at private boarding schools to survive without some sort of knowledge in media and technology. The 21st century is unique in that it provides students with an abundance of information; however, on the flip-side, the technological tools used to access this information are consistently changing. The result of this technological dynamic demands that students of the 21st century have the skills necessary to collaborate with other innovators, create new solutions, evaluate current technologies and adequately utilize existing media and technology to the highest advantage.

Life and Career Skills Will Never Go Out of Style

Thinking skills, content knowledge and competency within both the social and emotional realms are life skills that will always be relevant. The ability to adapt to challenging situations, take initiative and become a productive member of society will always be essential life skills for students, no matter what century they’re in.
