Picture this: You’re with a group of your fellow students halfway around the world in the city of Dehradun, India. It’s lightly raining as you walk down a vibrant green path that weaves through the Malsi Deer Park. Suddenly, an Indian monkey jumps into your path, playfully taunts you and your fellow students, and disappears back into the trees. This is the one-of-a-kind experience that you can only have while studying abroad.
Dehradun is just one of the places that students from boarding high schools can study abroad. Studying abroad — specifically at any one of our international educational partnerships in India, China, Ecuador, Peru or Japan — is an incredible opportunity for students at Wasatch Academy as well as boarding high schools around the world.
Three Tips for Studying Abroad
Maybe you’ve already made the decision to study abroad while at Wasatch Academy. Congratulations! However, before you leave on your overseas adventure, there are a few tips that will help you get the most out of your study abroad experience. Here are a few bits of advice that can help you have a successful, fulfilling experience thousands of miles away from home.
Jet lag is an inevitable aspect of traveling halfway around the world. However, don’t let jet lag take over your entire trip. Sure, you might be tired — but if you have to decide between taking a nap or exploring/going someplace new, EXPLORE! In the long run, you’ll regret it if you don’t.
Take the time to learn about the country you’re going to before you get there — and we don’t just mean downloading Duolingo a few days before your plane departs. A few weeks (or months) before your trip, start learning about the culture and language of the country you’re going to. Doing so will help you make new, foreign friends while you’re out exploring a new city.
Learn how to read a map — and we don’t mean Google Maps. Learn how to read an old-school, paper, fold-out map. If possible, purchase a map of the area where you’re staying and learn how to read it. Not only is it safer than relying on electronics, it will be more reliable in an emergency.
Remember — You’re Not Alone!
These three small pieces of advice are just the tip of the iceberg when studying abroad. Fortunately, you’ll be with other students from boarding high schools who are in the same boat as you are. If you work as a team, any problem you encounter while studying abroad can be solved — sans stress.
